Elmhurst embodies the real estate mantra of “location, location, location.” Perfectly situated just 16 miles west of downtown Chicago, the city stands at the crossroads of Interstate Highways 290, 294 and 88, and serves as the eastern doorway into DuPage County. O’Hare Airport is a mere 15 minutes away, and Midway Airport is within a 30-minute drive. Naperville, Joliet and Elgin all are within a one-hour drive, as are northwest Indiana and southwest Wisconsin.
The city’s main thoroughfare, York Street (commonly called York Road), runs through the heart of Elmhurst north from Roosevelt Road (Route 38) and south from Grand Avenue. Route 83 (Kingery Highway) and North Avenue (Route 64) intersect near Elmhurst’s northwest border, providing north-south and east-west passages, respectively.
The Metra Commuter Rail System Union Pacific West line shuttles commuters and passengers to and from Chicago and points in between. Scheduled around-the-clock, trains depart from the downtown station centrally located in Elmhurst City Centre at 128 West First Street. Pace, the suburban bus division of the Regional Transportation Authority, provides buses daily to the downtown Metra station and other Elmhurst locations.
