Elmhurst enjoys a rich cultural heritage that is proudly displayed across 50-plus historic attractions and museums, including several local landmarks.

Wilder Park is home to the Elmhurst Art Museum—an award-winning structure that incorporates the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed McCormack House—and Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, along with the Elmhurst Public Library, historic Wilder Mansion, Conservatory and Formal Gardens. The mansion, which housed the library until 2003, is being adapted for reuse by the Elmhurst Park District.

The city’s Cultural Campus also includes the Theatre Historical Society at York Theatre, the Elmhurst Historical Museum at the Glos Mansion and Elmhurst College, which hosts many lectures, concerts and plays around campus.

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra (founded 1962), housed at the College’s Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, has a year-round performance schedule featuring an outdoor family concert on the College Mall on Elmfest Sunday.

The Elmhurst Public Library, housed in a state-of-the-art facility west of the Art Museum, offers more than 250,000 books, audiobooks, CDs, CD-ROMs, videos and DVDs, and hundreds of magazine and newspaper subscriptions as well as public meeting rooms, group and silent study rooms, a computer training lab, more than 80 public computers, laptop Internet access, free storytimes and programs for children and adults, a drive-up window and coffee bar. It is a member of the Suburban Library System (SLS), making the collections of all member libraries available to Elmhurst, and many of its services are available online to EPL cardholders.

The College’s A.C. Buehler Library is also a SLS member and participates in ILLNET Online, a computer catalog of material in more than 45 academic libraries in Illinois. It also has a strong collection in nursing, business and art materials. Displayed throughout Buehler Library is the College’s art collection, featuring 53 pieces of Chicago Imagist art.
