Welcome to the 2009 issue of OMAHA: Extraordinary Opportunities. This publication tells the stories of the people who have made their homes here and the stories of businesses, organizations and institutions that have achieved success in our community. And we have plenty of stories to share!
New businesses and attractions are rising from the revitalized Missouri riverfront west to the horizon. Economic momentum is transforming our neighborhoods and smaller business districts citywide and throughout the surrounding counties. In fact, the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership estimates that in 2008 our area benefited from $1.26 billion in capital investment, including new businesses and expanded operations.
Retail and mixed-use development are strong throughout the area, with the impressive Aksarben Village and Midtown Crossing at Turner Park, as well as the 400-acre Coventry development in southwest Omaha. Yahoo! plans to invest $100 million in a new data center in La Vista and opened a shared services center in Omaha.
Omaha continues to maintain a lower unemployment rate than the nation. For the five years ending in 2008, Omaha’s average annual growth rate in private sector employment was 1.2 percent.
The city’s strong visual and performing arts communities continue to nurture world-class talents. Our affinity for amateur and professional sports is underscored by the construction of a new downtown baseball stadium within a few steps of Qwest Center Omaha arena and convention center and the astounding Holland Performing Arts Center. TD AMERITRADE Park Omaha will become home plate for the NCAA Men’s College World Series until at least 2035, signifying Omaha’s more than half-century history hosting the series and our commitment to the future.
We encourage you to give this magazine–and Greater Omaha–a close look. You’ll like what you see!
