Public and private education in Hermiston prepares students for their lives beyond the classroom. Through a combination of excellent staff, quality educational programs and numerous extracurricular activities, students excel. Education starts young at Bethlehem Lutheran Preschool and Cornerstone Preschool.

Some facilities in the Hermiston School District 8R have been a part of the community for years, while others are new additions to accommodate Hermiston’s growing population. Desert View Elementary, Highland Hills Elementary, Rocky Heights Elementary, Sunset Elementary and West Park Elementary serve children in grades kindergarten through fifth, each with an enrollment of about 430 to over 480. About 1,000 students combined, attend Armand Larive Middle School or Sandstone Middle for grades six through eight.

Hermiston High School has an enrollment of approximately 1,300 students in grades nine through 12. The high school moved into a brand new building with prime amenities in 2002. A library and media center offers a great resource for research, eight computer labs are equipped with the latest in technology, and three physical educational areas ensure students maintain a healthy level of activity. The huge 532-seat fine arts auditorium, 70 classrooms, lecture hall, and alternative education building all enhance the learning experience for students at HHS.

Private schools in the area include Hermiston Christian School for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and Hermiston Junior Academy, serving grades kindergarten through eight.

Blue Mountain Community College’s main campus is located in Pendelton, Oregon, with other campuses situated in Hermiston, Milton-Freewater and Baker City. Students here can use the education they receive to transfer to a four-year institution upon graduation. The college also offers a program to earn a four-year degree. Small class sizes provide students with more individual attention from highly qualified instructors. Online classes make learning easy for students with a non-traditional schedule. Certificate programs are also available.

Eastern Oregon University’s main campus is located in La Grande, Oregon. Through the university’s Division of Distance Education, students can participate in classes through the Hermiston and Mid-Columbia Regional Center located in Hermiston.

Hermiston Public Library furnishes patrons with a variety of materials to utilize. As a member of Sage Library System, the library is connected to 70 other libraries, and with this asset, the book count available reaches over one million. Hermiston Public Library alone holds 34,000 books, 700 large print books, 100 microfilms, more than 900 videos, almost 4,500 periodicals, 600 books on tape and a growing collection of downloadable audio books. More than 200 books in Spanish and a number of videos make up a Spanish-language library. Computers with Internet access are available for public use. The library also conducts a number of programs to educate, entertain and enrich the community.
