The City of Hermiston is governed by the mayor, city council and city manager all working together to make decisions in order to maintain and improve the safety and well-being of the community and economic development.
The Hermiston Police Department is working on implementing and continuing efforts to better procedures and policies to improve the service they provide to the city. One way the department is looking to do this is to introduce community oriented policing into areas with a higher presence of crime and those that have a higher proportion of calls to the dispatch center. The department will carry on the mission to prevent crime with the use of neighborhood organizations like Neighborhood Watch. The department may also implement a similar type of group for area businesses. Gang resistance will remain a priority with the gang enforcement officer on staff. The safety of area schools is in the hands of school resource officers.
Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services is the community’s response team for fires and other emergency situations.
The staff is made up of a fire chief, assistant chief, the fire marshal, three captains, three lieutenants, 12 firefighters/ paramedics and 25 volunteer firefighters. The three fire stations in Hermiston serve 150 square miles.
Calls to the dispatch center concerning fire emergencies account for only about 25 percent of total annual calls. As a result, Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services are trained in the highest level of EMS in order to respond to the over 2,400 medical emergency calls per year, throughout more than 500 miles of West Umatilla County.
Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services are qualified to respond to hazardous materials emergencies. FireMed, a program provided through Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services, offers emergency ambulance service for a minimal cost. Non-emergency service is also covered, but must be pre-authorized by a physician.
